 A yoke is a crossbar with two u-shaped pieces that go around the neck of oxen.  


What is yoga?

The word yoga means "to yoke" in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, where yoga originated. The word “yoke" means to connect, unite or join. Yoga reminds us that all living beings (including plants and animals) are connected. Yoga also connects our body, mind and spirit together.

Isn't yoga just poses?

What is commonly referred to as modern day "yoga" can be more accurately described by the Sanskrit word "asana" which refers to the practice of physical postures or poses.

How old is yoga?

Yoga may be over 5000 years old. Early archeological evidence relating to yoga’s existence was found in the Indus valley.

Is it religious?

While many religions continue to want to make yoga their own, it belongs to all of us. It has many facets that can be found in the Hindu and Buddhist faith, but the basic principals are universal and based on “the eight limbs of yoga”, which can be found in all religions.

When and how did yoga come to the US?

In the 1930s, many Westerners began to study yoga as part of an interest in health and vegetarianism. Indian yogis introduced yoga to Hollywood around that same time, as well.

In the 1960s, more Indian yogis came to the West and Western pop culture icons, like the Beatles, displayed an interest in yoga and it started to become even more popular in the West.

Do I have to do a certain type of yoga?

No! Today there are limitless styles of yoga, all based on ingredients from different types of yoga including - Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Bikram.
